| About Us |
| Metro Montessori is an association of independent Montessori schools and teacher training programs in the Washington, DC area.
All of our member schools are committed to the highest standards of excellence and share the belief in the education of the complete child.
Each child is a unique human being and it is our goal to help children reach their maximum potential, both academically and
socially.
The graduates of our schools perform well above grade level in math and reading. They gain independence and self confidence, and most
importantly, a love for school and the process of learning.

| Our Philosophy: Montessori |
| Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician who designed a method of education by observing young children and how they learn. Her
extensive early childhood research, which is supported by modern research, revealed that children experience sensitive periods for learning during their
early years. They easily learn particular skills during the corresponding sensitive periods, more so than at any other time in their life. Through her books, Dr.
Montessori suggested to parents and teachers the conditions for encouraging the natural development of the whole child from birth
through maturity. Out of this research-based foundation, the Montessori "Method of Education" emerged.
The Montessori classroom is an intricate, fascinating place for children to unfold and discover. The Montessori ideal is that a child's own awakened
love of discovery and learning will fuel his or her own education. To this end, the Montessori classroom is a treasure of highly specialized materials
that aid in skill development.
The children are free to choose their own work. They learn to ask, "What do I want to do?" choose and then become focused on their own work and behavior. Thus, ideally, a Montessori child is able to develop his/her own sense of concentration as well as a greater sense
of confidence, character and self-esteem.
As children form and develop, they take what is needed from the environment for self-construction; children show an inner need to learn to
know themselves and their world. They want to develop their intelligence and to become independent and responsible. As our staff prepares and provides
these specialized environments, children can experience the fulfillment of their potential.
